The Heather House Presents: A Journey Through 250 Years of American Sound
Join us July 30th, 31st, and August 1st at the Heather House in Marine City, MI.
Celebrate 250 years of American creativity through the evolving voice of the piano. This recital traces a vivid musical journey from the 19th century to the modern era, showcasing composers who shaped and challenged the sound of the United States.
The program opens with Louis Moreau Gottschalk’s The Banjo, a virtuosic, rhythmically charged work that draws on early American popular idioms. Edward MacDowell’s Woodland Sketches follows, offering lyrical miniatures inspired by the natural landscape and spirit of Americana.
Scott Joplin’s Magnetic Rag brings refined syncopation and late ragtime sophistication, paving the way for George Gershwin’s Three Preludes, where jazz, blues, and classical forms merge into a distinctly American voice.
The program turns inward with Aaron Copland’s Piano Variations, a stark and powerful exploration of structure and intensity. Written in the aftermath of September 11, Ron Mazurek’s Final Bell offers a brief meditation on memory, loss, and resonance before the program concludes with Samuel Barber’s Nocturne, a luminous and introspective work that reflects the expressive depth of 20th-century American music.
Together, these works celebrate innovation, diversity, and the enduring artistry of American composers across generations.
Tickets are required. Light refreshments to be served.
